Freedom of speech and the truth’s relativism in Brazilian electoral rhetoric

Abstract

The article provides an in-depth and critical approach to the relationship between freedom of expression, the discretion of public agents, and the importance of transparency and ethics in political communication in the Brazilian democratic context. The need to guarantee freedom of expression as a fundamental right stands out, but it also respects the limits and responsibilities of public agents, especially during the electoral period. Discretionary, instead of being seen as a restriction on freedom, is interpreted as a principle that aims to guarantee the transparent and responsible action of political agents, avoiding abuses of power and deviations of purpose. The analysis of the importance of transparency in public administration, the differentiation between active and passive rights of citizens, and the need for accountability on the part of public agents reinforce the need for an ethical political and electoral environment committed to democracy. Criticism of the distortion of information on social networks and the manipulation of facts to benefit private interests reinforces the importance of respecting norms and the responsibility of political agents for disseminating to the population. The discussion about the need for more effective control of social networks and the responsible use of online communication by public agents highlights a significant challenge for Brazilian democracy in the digital era. The text highlights the importance of ensuring a balance between freedom of expression, public responsibility, and transparency, aiming to strengthen democratic principles and promote a healthy and informed public debate.
